Dreaming of Julia
By Andrew Caulfield
The Kentucky Derby and A.P. Indy haven’t been made for each other, at least so far. Of course 1992’s Horse of the Year appeared to have the Churchill Downs classic at his mercy until a badly bruised foot forced him onto the sidelines, but he has yet to make amends as a stallion. The closest his sons have come to taking the Derby was Aptitude’s second in 2000, but the 2010 race provided a sign that A.P. Indy is going to make an impact on the Derby, if only indirectly. Victory that year went to Super Saver (Maria’s Mon), whose dam is by A.P. Indy, with the runner-up Ice Box being by A.P. Indy’s son Pulpit.
